Laurel Gibson's Embroidering the Old Spanish Trail
Extended Engagement: October 15 through January 14, 2017
Laurel Gibson’s elegant hand-embroidered and drawn depictions on 1920s player piano rolls present the music and multi-ethnic cultures within Southern neighborhoods connected by the 1920s transcontinental highway called the Old Spanish Trail (OST). Bihl Haus is sited on a 5-mile stretch of the OST on Fredericksburg Road; San Antonio is the OST’s historic center point, which runs from Florida to California. Gibson's embroidered drawings, a traditional “women’s work” art form, transforms actual 1920s-era player piano rolls into living documents. The mapped OST route from Florida to California will become lively illustrated artworks that literally integrate the mechanical music that defined the era with visual depictions of Southern cultural recollections.

Please park in the circle lot and enter through the walk-in gate. Overflow parking is available at Redeemer Church.

2018 Programming: Bihl Haus commemorates the San Antonio Tricentennial with an entire year of programming informed by critical commentary and diverse historical perspectives on the meaning of the Tricentennial. We are currently seeking thoughful proposals with deep and broad context and meaning from diverse voices across the City. Think 300 years in the past and 300 years in the future.
